Reading/Phonics
Reading Instruction will focus on the five essential components needed to become a fluent reader. The five essential components are: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

Everyday Math
In first grade we will be utilizing Everyday Mathematics to focus on several topics:
Writing
We will be utilizing Handwriting Without Tears to practice letter and number formation. Under the Common Core Standards, students will learn three kinds of writing: opinion, informative, and narrative. We will follow a Writer's Workshop Model where students will have the opportunity to practice the three kinds of writing as well as learn about the process of writing :
Pre-writing: Writers decide on a topic and brainstorm ideas.
Drafting: Writers write sentences and paragraphs, reread what they’ve written, and get suggestions from others.
Revising: Writers rearrange words or sentences, add or delete, replace words, and make sure their writing is fluent.
Editing: Writers correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Publishing/Sharing: Writers create a final copy of their work and share it.
Science/Social Studies
MACS follows Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for education. The units of study will include:
